INTERIOR DESIGN -
open plan dining/living area
A semi-detached town property, St Albans, Hertfordshire
Description: A young family sought my expertise for a vast house extension with an already impressive kitchen, but the remaining areas left much to be desired. The challenge was to create distinct spaces that stood out individually without overwhelming the overall harmony. Among the most perplexing was the dark corner in the dining area, where sound seemed to rebound off the walls, the ceiling was lower than the rest of the space, and the flooring lacked comfort underfoot.
Brief: layered, colourful with a focal point for friends and family to enjoy time together
Application of biophilic design: biophilic design principles were applied through additional lighting fixtures strategically placed allowing to bounce light off reflective surfaces, brightening the corner and creating a more inviting atmosphere. Acoustic panels were added to absorb sound and reduce echo, enhancing the auditory comfort of the space. To further elevate the experience, extra large rug was placed underfoot, providing a sense of warmth and tactile comfort. These elements together transformed the dark, unwelcoming corner into a harmonious and soothing dining area ready to tackle everyday challenges.
